FDIC pulls Madoff-scale fraud, looting $45 billion from bank vaults, while ordering banks to pretend like the cash is still there It was fraud enough when the Fed forced accountants to let banks keep bad assets on their books at 2 or 3 times their actual market values. So that bank depositors wouldn't know how insolvent their banks really were. Now, following in the Fed's footsteps, the FDIC has pulled a Madoff-scale fraud by looting $45 billion in cash from the nation's bank vaults to cover their expenses. While ordering all banks to keep the missing cash as an asset on their books for the next three years. Sad to say, the bank balance sheets backing your deposits have now become complete works of fiction.

Escaping from the Keynesian trap that is wrecking our civilization If we don't find a way to fix our civilization's flawed economic model, the potential of humods technologies to radical improve the quality and length of our lives will be lost along with our civilization. To understand how our politicos think and what makes them do the wrong thing economically, you need to understand the flawed economic theory of John Maynard Keynes. Keynes believed that recessions were caused by variation in consumer psychology that made consumers sometimes cut down on their expenditures and raise their savings. When confidence in the future falls, consumers cease spending and begin hoarding their money. Sometimes a vicious cycle can set in, with falling confidence causing less spending and more money hoarding, which causes confidence to fall still more, and so on. Keynes suggested that the best way to break free of this downward spiral was the formation of a central bank, which could print more money and drop interest rates to stimulate spending and restore consumer confidence. Keynes went on to noted that an especially serious losses of confidence might result in a situation where simply lowering interest rates and printing money would not be enough to restore economic activity. In such a case, people might continue to hoard money, no matter how much was put into circulation. This would cause the central monetary authority to lose effective control over the economy. At this point, Keynes speculated, the government should drastically increase their own spending. What they spent money on didn't particularly matter, as long as enough money got pumped into the economy to restore consumers' confidence. So that consumers would stop saving and start spending again. It is this erroneous Keynesian mindset in our politicos, which makes them think that increased savings are bad news for the economy. What makes gold a good form of money is because it has an intrinsic value. It isn't just paper printed by a government that has often become worthless in the past. But to Keynes this made gold a bad form of money from the state's point of view. A government doesn't want to allow a highly productive citizen to work hard in his youth, so he or she can retire and live off bags of gold coins. A state wants to force those highly productive citizen to keep slaving away and paying taxes for as long as possible. A central bank issuing paper or fiat money can accomplish this, but constantly inflated away the value of that money. Since the Federal Reserve Bank was established, they have eroded the value of the dollar by about 96%. In so doing, they have made it impossible for you to rely on your savings, the buying power of which they steadily erode away. A side effect to the constant monetary inflation that Keynes recommends is that people are forced into risky market speculation. High risk investments are necessary just to maintain the buying power of your accumulated wealth. This causes bubble after bubble to inflate and burst in all the various markets. By contrast, the alternative theory of economics, called Austrian Economics, for where it was first described makes far more sense. It points out that greater savings creates more investment in tools and equipment, which adds to worker productivity and creates greater wealth for us all. If you are a roofer and can save enough to buy a nail gun. Then you can put the roof on twice as fast as before and make more per hour, while also giving the homeowner you are working for a lower price for replacing his roof. Austrian economics a description of how economics actually work, whereas Keynes' ideas are toxic for most of us, but greatly benefit a select few - politicos and economists. Politicos get to grab far more power and wealth thanks to the justification of large centralize government by Keynesian economists and they, in turn, richly reward economists willing to sing the praises of Keynesian-ism. Creating a negative feedback loop that is driving our civilization towards economic ruin.

A few thoughts on how the economic situation is likely to unfold from here If the market had been allowed to function normally, $20 trillion or so in private debt would have already evaporated in an unprecedented wave of bankruptcies to normalized private debt levels. Instead, the government intervened to keep those levels at roughly double the percentage that brought on the Great Depression. This is the same mistake Japan made that has hobbled their economy for over a decade and will hobble the American economy until the excessive private debt levels are normalized. Normalization can be accomplished in three ways, debt forgiveness, a unprecedented wave of bankruptcies or by hyper-inflating the debt away. Debt forgiveness is the fastest and least destructive to the economy, but inflating the debt away lets Congress protect their fat cat contributors better at the expense of everyone else. So it appears that inflating the debt away is the path that has been selected.

The simple minded stupidity of the neocon worldview is made perfectly clear by hearing what motivated that Iraqi reporter to throw his shoes at Bush Before Invasion: All hated the oppression of Saddam Hussein but Shia and Sunni prayed together and both would celebrate the birthday of Christ with Christians. After Invasion: "The invasion divided brother from brother, neighbor from neighbor. It turned our homes into funeral tents." Muntazer al-Zaidi. Instead of bringing democracy to the middle east and creating a new ally for America, as the neocons planned. A Holy War broke out, which forced most of Iraq's Christians to flea for their lives into foreign exile and took hundreds of thousands of lives in Shia vs. Sunni conflicts. Pro-America secular canidates were rejected in the eventual Iraq election and a Shia party run by politicians beholden to Iran took control. The spread of democracy was set back by a generation in the middle east with people now thinking that it brings only chaos and war. And by crushing Sunni control of Iraq, the neocons created for Shia Iran a powerful new Shia ally in Iraq. If the radical clerics that control Iran had been put in charge of America's middle eastern policy. They could not have designed a policy more favorable to Iran's radical clerics and less favorable to American interests, than the one America's neocons persuaded George Bush to execute. Sacrificing the lives of our brave troops in silly attempts to spread democracy to places like Iraq & Afghanistan that only make Iran stronger, is criminalism, not conservatism. This folly should be unwound as quickly as possible, so our troops can return to their families and homes.

The one immutable principal of economics that John Maynard Keynes got exactly right and the Fed gets completely wrong "There is no subtler, no surer means of overturning the existing basis of society than to debauch the currency. The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose." ~ The Economic Consequences of the Peace by John Maynard Keynes (1919). The dollar's buying power has collapsed by approximately 96% since the Fed took control of the dollar and began imposing a hidden inflation tax on the value of everyone's savings. A similar currency debasement is what brought down the Roman Empire.
